Atlanta Day By Day: My 2006 RWA National Conference Diary
Jenna Petersen/Jess Michaels

Tuesday, July 25 -- Easy, Breezy, Beautiful Avon Girls

The view from our hotel window.

I started out the day hot, sweaty and tired... and that was before I arrived in Atlanta! But at least my flight wasn't its usual early morning and it was entirely uneventful (direct from Central IL to Atlanta... woohoo!). I actually slept part of the way, which is unusual for me. It's good because by the end of this adventure, I'll be longing for a bed. And then I was in Atlanta!

A few thoughts: First, I always felt safe, both during the day and in the evening. Granted, I didn't walk around all that much, but when I did, I didn't get the impression that death was imminent. So the rumors that were going around about the lack of safety in the area we were in were, in my opinion, greatly exaggerated. In addition, the airport was very easy, at least coming IN. My bag was waiting for me by the time I got to baggage claim. I had a cab within seconds of stepping outside and to the hotel within moments. In fact, within fifty minutes of landing, I was already in my hotel room (through check out and actually setting my stuff in the bed) with the lovely Kathryn Smith (my fabulous conference roommate).

We hung out for a bit, I unpacked and ran down to register. Whoa! Our bag this year was SWEET! Lots of awesome pockets and zippers. Sponsored by Avon, you know! I'm just saying!! But the thing weighed almost 20 pounds because of all the books it had in it. My own included Secrets, Volume 12

which I gave to Kathryn. Anyway, so then we headed off to our Avon early arrival dinner at the Pacific Rim Bistro just down the street from our hotel. This dinner is an annual tradition. It's not hosted by Avon or anything, it's just a casual gathering of any of our 'Avon Ladies' who have arrived on Tuesday night. I really enjoy it every year, this was no exception. The food was lovely (sushi yum!!), as was the company. Afterward, some of us had a couple of drinks in the hotel bar (actually, we got the drinks at the bar, but sat in the Garden Level open seating level since the bar was so PACKED). Then it's off to bed.

Wednesday, July 26 -- Let the Games Begin
After a sleepless night (the bed was super comfortable, but I tossed and turned), I got up and dressed and ready for the day to come. First Kathryn and I tooled around the hotel just to check everything out and go to the goodie room and the book fair room. Unfortunately, the book fair didn't have From London With Love, which is a bummer since I knew they wouldn't have it at the signings either that night or at the Open House signing on Friday. The booksellers (from the local Waldens) were very nice and I know they tried, but it just didn't work out. So, I'm sorry if you came thinking you'd get the book. At least it's everywhere now, so you should be able to find it. And hey, if you want it signed, just send me a SASE and I'll send you a signed bookplate.

After a bit, I hooked up with my friend Shelley Bradley for lunch. So many great things have been happening for us both this year that it's been a while since we were online to IM at the same time. So we caught up, which is always one of the best things about these conferences. You get to hang with people you only see once a year or even less. Lovely.

Then I caught a quick drink and rest before I headed off to the Booksellers Tea. This was a new event that was open to published authors who RSVP'd ahead of time. It was of no cost to us and was meant to be a way to make some connections with booksellers. It was a great idea in theory, but the room was too small and got very hot, very quickly.  Plus, there were only a handful of booksellers/librarians (that I saw) to a large number of authors, so we ended up having to stalk and pounce. Which doesn't seem very conducive to building relationships. :) But I think with some tweaking, it will be a fabulous event and I hope they try again next year. The heat made me feel a little dizzy, so I slipped out early and wandered my way toward the booksigning area.

Of course one of RWA's premier events at National is the Literacy Booksigning, which is open to the public and sends all proceeds to local and National literacy programs. Last year was the first time I signed, so I was looking forward to this year. It did not disappoint. First, as I made my way across the sea of empty seats to find my place, I saw a t-shirt draped across my chair. Avon had provided shirts with our covers on them! I had one for From London With Love and one for Parlor Games. You can see that I'm wearing it in the picture to the right. :)

I signed both Parlor Games and Scandalous and got to see friends and other writers for three hours. Plus, I was seated in 'Petersen/Peterson Row' with Irene Peterson and Ann Voss Peterson. Miriam and May both stopped by, so I got to see them for the first time in Atlanta. It's always nice when your editor says how

excited she is that your book is out. Phew! Me too!!! Anyway, the event raised over $60,000 for Literacy, so yay readers and authors!

Then afterward we held what I hope will become a tradition like our Avon Pre-Dinner. We held a special get-together for the members of the Avon Authors Message Board who had come to Atlanta for the conference and/or booksigning. Wow, what a cool bunch of ladies.

Thanks to J. Perry (who is so pretty, I wish I had a picture), MaryP, Sally (who I didn't see), AndreaW (and her lovely sister and very patient husband), Crystal and LaceyKaye (who I somehow didn't get a picture of even though we hung out quite a bit), as well as SarahKate. I think that's all the Board people who were there... but correct me if I missed you. I'm sleepy.

Anyway, I'm hoping that next year we'll repeat this, maybe with a more planned venue rather than just in a lobby area. I loved meeting you all and putting all those beautiful faces to names.

Afterward, I was just so freaking exhausted. I hadn't eaten since I picked at the Bookseller Tea, so Kate and I grabbed some sandwiches and cokes and headed up to eat and collapse. This time, I had no trouble sleeping like a log.

Thursday, July 27 -- Food, Food... and Can I Have Some More Food?
The Avon Red Breakfast launched my Thursday. This was held at the Ritz Carlton hotel about four blocks away from the Marriot Marquis. It was where many editors and agents were staying (including the Avon staff). The peach French toast was divine! I'm salivating thinking about it four days later. Mmmmmm.... Okay, sorry, I was distracted. Anyway, Lucia Macro and May Chen, two of the editors for Red, as well as Marketing geniuses Adrienne and Nicole (last names withheld so no one will randomly email them and say I said to) attended. Then there were the Red Authors, all in all, there were about 16 or 17 of us in attendance, which meant it was loud and fun. And did I mention the French toast? Anyway, it seems like Red is going strong and we're all looking forward to the launch of the single titles starting in September with Toni Blake's Swept Away. It's always nice to spend that time, hear the editorial vision and just get to know everyone better. Of course, afterward I stayed behind chatting with May a few minutes and then left through the wrong door and couldn't figure out how to get to the RIGHT door. So I ended up grabbing my own cab (yeah, four blocks, but I was so turned around) rather than riding with the others. Doh!

What's funny is that by the time I got back, it was pretty much time for the Meg Cabot Luncheon. So Kathryn and I met up and headed for the ballroom. We snuck out early (we both had appointments that conflicted), but not before we ate lunch with the one and only Rita Clay Estrada. The same Rita Clay Estrada who co-founded RWA with her late mother, Rita Gallagher. The same one the RITA is named after. Yeah. That Rita. She was absolutely lovely and gracious (despite the fact we were total fan girls). It was an honor to eat with her.

Still star-struck, I grabbed an hour with my publicist, Jo-Ann Power of Power Promotions. We chit chat and do some pre-planning for our promotional plan for Desire Never Dies. It's weird to think that it's that time since From London With Love just came out, but it is! It's really only about four and a half months before DND will be on the shelves, so it's time to get on the stick! Plans will be put in motion starting this week. Oh, and there's already an excerpt up at Jenna Petersen.

When I left the lovely Jo-Ann, I met Kate and we were lucky enough to bump into Sue Grimshaw and Kathy Baker. If you're a writer and you don't know those names.... well, you should. Sue Grimshaw is over all Romance at Borders/Waldens and Kathy is a Waldens lead romance expert. These ladies are some of the most supportive cheerleaders of our industry. And they're always so fabulous and open to writers. I always love chatting with Sue and though I've met Kathy before, this was one of the first times I got to actually talk to her for more than a few minutes. So it was a real treat. Having such advocates is a blessing in this industry.

Afterward, as we were hanging out with fabulous Sonia Singh, we stumbled upon Lacey Kaye, another Avon Board poster. We hauled her away for dinner (I'm telling you, this entire day was just eat, eat, eat) and talked books (hers, ours and others). Then I hit the room for a bit to call my sweetie and my Mom. Sometimes you just need those little down times and I've learned to take them. Afterward, I met with Miriam and Jenna Black (another client and Jenna and very nice person) and we bumped into Tor editor Anna Genoese and her posse for drinks.

After? BED. I was so tired!!

Friday, July 28 -- Pretty Princess Party

Today and tomorrow were my busy days, so I got right up and got down to it. Okay, that's a lie. I totally slept in, got ready and slipped downstairs for a bite before I headed to the Avon Open House signing. Did you guys know about these? Yeah, I didn't my first two conferences. These are open only to conference attendees and involve FREE BOOKS signed by the authors. Every publishing house does one. Anyway, this is the first one I got to do. Last year I came and chatted with folks while the authors were signing, but this year it's me signing! I was there early, so I browsed the books and chatted with our people (authors and Avon staff). Then the doors opened and the insanity ensued. People, books and boxes everywhere!

I started signing at 10:30 (it went in shifts of half hours starting at 10 and ending at 11:30). There was never a pause! I figured I'd have lots of books left over, but they were flying out of my hands! People wanted Parlor Games, they wanted Scandalous, they wanted From London With Love coverflats! I didn't take a drink, I didn't rest, I just signed! Then, my time was up, but I wasn't out of people, so we moved to an overflow table (I felt so 'cool girl'). I kept signing for another fifteen minutes! I gave away EVERY BOOK, including one I messed up the dedication to, but another reader didn't care! I gave away all my coverflats but three. It was insane and I loved it!! So... thanks to anyone who popped by and got books. I'm so glad I got to meet even more people!

Afterward, lovely May Chen took a group of her authors, including moi, to a lunch at The Flying Biscuit. We won't discuss the cab ride over. The cabbies in Atlanta were awful! Rip-off artists who don't know their own city. It's... weird. But somehow we survived (and at one point, when our driver turned right from a left lane, I wasn't sure I'd be able to say that). The place was well-worth it. Yum! Then five of us (we had split into two groups) crammed into a cab (someone has a picture, is it you Anne Mallory... or maybe it's best left to the imagination) and made our way back to the hotel. And speaking of Anne "Trouble" Mallory, she and I hung out for a bit, which was good (thanks babe, and you know why). We made plans to meet up once we were all ready for our Avon Party that night and then split up to get ready.

The Avon Family Dinner... what can I say? It was fabulous. I mean, almost indescribable! The venue rocked, the food rocked (I could have just eaten a plate of the tuna tartar and been in heaven), the company was great... it was all things good and classy.

I think my favorite part of all of it is the role call. I'm not sure how other publisher parties work, but at ours Carrie Feron and Lucia Macro read the names of every author in attendance, as well as one of their accomplishments for the year. Mine was my appearance on the Waldenbooks Mass Market list with Scandalous. But it really makes you feel like you're important to have your moment in the sun. In such a big house, with so many really star authors, it's very meaningful.

Anyway, I have many more pictures, which I'll probably post at the end of this diary, but here's a sampling. We cleared out after the dinner, took pictures, and headed back on the Avon-provided buses to the hotel. Once there, a handful of us decided to go get some drinks. So Kate, Julianne MacLean, Robyn DeHart, Shane Bolks/Shana Galen, Sophie Jordan, Shirley Karr, Anne Mallory and I all hit the bar. Love those girls.

Afterward, we Kate and I dragged back up to our room where we stripped off our make-up and clothes (not at the same time -- though I may have gotten to second base with Kate earlier in the evening... but I'll let HER tell that story) and we went to bed.

Saturday, July 29 -- Best RITA Ceremony... EVER
Okay, I'll admit it... I planned to go to an 8:30am workshop, but I slept in. It seems to be a theme. Hey, I needed sleep and I wasn't going to bed early, that's for damn sure! So by the time I dragged myself up and got ready, it was almost time for the Avon Spotlight. I headed downstairs and found a few friends. Robyn DeHart, Kathryn Smith and J. Perry from the Avon Board were all hanging out by the doors, so we chatted. The Spotlight was great, as always. Lots of talk about the new Avon FanLit. Seriously, people, this looks to be super cool! You should sign up!!

When that was over, it was time for the Christina Dodd luncheon (where Avon's own Lucia Macro won the Industry Award!!). I hadn't eaten much when Miriam called to see if I had time to eat with her. So I abandoned my tablemates and she and I chatted outside. Right as the luncheon ended, I met briefly with Carrie Feron. Then met with Miriam again for a drink before our workshop (Tip: Present Drunk. No, I'm just kidding, I had half a glass of wine and a diet Coke). It was then time for our presentation. This year Miriam, May and I did "The A-Team", which was basically a panel where we discussed the steps we took to get me from Sold to On Sale with Scandalous. It was great fun. It was also a Jenna Lovefest (and actually all three of us had a lovefest collectively, but it's always very cool when the entire thing is "And Jenna is awesome because..." or "We love Jenna when..." and "Jenna makes it so easy because she..."). Sweet. I want to do this every year. What an ego boost. If you came, what did you think? Was it useful? Should we do it again?

Anyway, we all enjoyed it. And your questions were great, so thanks!

Afterward, since Miriam didn't seem to be sick of me yet and I could never get sick of her, we decided to do our dinner plans. For the first time since Thursday, I headed out from the hotel. We found a restaurant and I can't even remember the name! But it was good. It was hot in the foyer part, but the food was good and we had a nice chat.

Jenna, Miriam Kriss and May Chen are "The A-Team".

Then we headed back to the hotel and sat together during the RITA ceremony. Oh God, the RITA ceremony. It was so good!!! It wasn't too long. It took itself seriously enough, but not too seriously. The focus was on WRITERS and especially the writers who were nominated the various categories. And they had movie and television clips about writers that made the entire audience laugh hysterically. And who doesn't want to see Hugh Jackman as a romance writer, people? Seriously! Yum times ten.

Not to mention that the speeches were lovely. And Nora was so classy and fab as the hostess. Though I know the likelihood of obtaining her career is slim, I certainly wouldn't mind being that cool when I grow up. And Susan Elizabeth Phillips! So classy, the intro: so funny, the speech: so lovely! It was great. I got to see a few people before I turned in and then... it was over. I cleaned up, packed up, and set my alarm for the morning. Met Shelley Bradley to share a cab, got an earlier flight even and... I made it home! Another conference in the books.

Final Thoughts: I'm no expert on RWA National. This is only my fourth National, actually, though it seems like more. But I can tell you... it was the best. The hotel was great. The staff was great. The tone of the conference was a perfect balance between fun and respect and joy for what we do. Plus, Kathryn Smith was an awesome roommate, too! I had a spectacular time.

But more than anything, the conference made me want to WRITE (which is good... deadline fast approaching!!). And that's what Conference should do. It should make you want to race home and get the words down. It should make you swell with excitement about what we do. If it achieves that, then nothing else matters.
